65th D-DAY ANNIVERSARY & THE NORMANDY LANDINGS - 2009

June 6th 1944 - D-Day - the Allied invasion of Normandy in World War II, also known as 'Operation Overlord' and 'Operation Neptune' ( the sea-borne part of the operation). The landings commenced on June 6, 1944 (D-Day), beginning at 6:30 British Double Summer Time (H-Hour).

In historical and human consequences, D-Day is probably humankind's most critical turning point in history, signalling the beginning of the end of fascism and the return of liberty to hundreds of millions of people. It was the largest and most complex logistical and human exercise in history, drawing upon human and military resources on an unprecedented scale.

Poppy Travel is proud to present our new web-site to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of D-Day, with extensive information on the History and Background of D-Day, D-Day Maps, a great D-Day Image Library and extensive Normandy D-Day Battlefield Tours. * Click here for 65th D-Day Anniversary Photos.

* UPDATE: THE POPPY TRAVEL D-DAY REMEMBRANCE PILGRIMAGE 4-8 JUNE 2009 **PHOTOS!**
Some 90 people travelled with us to this most historic of occasions, the 65th Anniversary of D-Day, experiencing a most moving service at Bayeux Cathedral attended also by Prince Charles and the Prime Minister. Time was also spent at special commemorative ceremonies at Arromanches and other D-Day landing beaches. Poppy Travel, through its special School Tours division also took a large group of school children allowing them to experience first hand the living history of this special occasion. We strongly recommend taking one of our D-Day Battlefield Tours (as below) going a little later in the year to experience this historic 65th anniversary year - No crowds, a great itinerary, good hotels, beautiful summer weather & an extremely experienced guide, & you can also use Heroes Return 2 Travel Grants!
